Diesel Cars Make a Comeback in the U.S.

Scientific American -- Gone are the days of riding in the family station wagon, inhaling smelly, sooty fumes from a noisy diesel engine.

Diesel engines have always been more efficient than their gasoline counterparts, but over the last decade, the autos and the fuel they run on have had to come a long way to shed their dirty image. Today, diesel cars offer Americans another fuel-efficient vehicle option that could also ease the pain at the pump.

"The great thing about diesel is that it's coming in at the right time," said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. "It's proven itself as a technology, and it has the credentials to compete with policymakers and customers that want to drive a car that's good for the environment and low in carbon dioxide emissions."

The innovations and technology finally caught up with the diesel powered cars to make them more efficient and cleaner. Now they have to lower the prices for diesel fuel for automobiles.

These diesel burners burn cleaner and are quieter than your grandfather's diesels.
I still wouldn't buy one though.

More practical and affordable than many alternatives.

If cost of ownership and operating are better than gasoline, I would consider buying one in ten years or more when I am back in the market for a replacement vehicle.

They are cleaner but still dirty and smell. Anything saved at the pump will be more than spent on maintenace, they ain't cheap to fix!

Now, if only we could get congress to put an export tax (or something) on diesel, diesel prices would come down to a reasonable level.

Diesels have coma a long way since the old days off sooty exhausts!

Some day I may actually own one... likely a truck over a car, where the extra torque of a diesels helps most!

I tried driving on the freeway with the window rolled down today. It was stinky. Had to roll it up. How did we survive without air conditioning when we had no choice but to roll down the windows.

The engines may be better, but the cost of fuel really has to be weighed against the "increase" in mileage. Diesel here is more expensive than premium gasoline.

Every since VW showed us in real terms how their TDI technology made diesel engines clean, quiet, peppy and smoke free I've been an advocate of Rudy's invention.

Diesel inventories are 14% below last year, yet, Big Oil exported 1 MILLION Barrels/day of diesel to China and India... artificially keeping domestic supplies constrained, thereby forcing prices way up. All GREED!!!!

I love my TDI diesel. I get over 55 mpg on the road, 50 mpg average for ALL driving. I can run on 100% biodiesel, made from recycled cooking oil. No smoke, gobs of power. Not my father's diesel!

Is it still more efficient from an economic standpoint when you factor in the higher cost of diesel?
