We are Decades Away from a Cure for our Fossil Fuel Addiction

OilPrice.com -- With natural gas prices low and supplies high, we are decades away from being able to wean ourselves off fossil fuels and move to renewable energy, but there is no reason for dismay.

There seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to render the renewable energy-versus-fossil fuels debate in black and white terms, in a one-or-the-other symposium.

A sudden “switch” to clean energy is not possible; rather it must be a gradual introduction of renewable energy sources combined with an increase in domestic fossil fuels production.

With Canada the new Saudi Arabia and our Dakota's knocking at the door, BP making fudgesicles in the Arctic until they finally hit oil we will have plenty to keep our refineries busy for many years.

Let the market decide. End subsidies for both fossil fuels and renewables. If the tree-huggers want to impress me; they will invent a product that is safe and uses renewable energy at a price that is competitive with gasoline/diesel/propane/natural gas/etc.

The way Obama and the tree-huggers are approaching the problem is by forcing us to pay more for the alternatives and to subsidize the rich peoples new toys.

I'm glad I will not live to see the end of fossil fuel use. There is no, never was, and never will be a better fuel than gasoline.

Need to convert to more natural gas and it shouldn't take decades for that.

"Fossil Fuel Addiction"??? When fossil fuels are the only cost-effective, viable sources of energy I wouldn't call it an addiction. Are we to feel bad for using a little gasoline to get to work and keeping some heat in our homes?

No quarrel with this article, and I think this is how it SHOULD be. As supplies of fossil fuels become more difficult (and expensive) to acquire, and alternative fuels become more efficient and competitive, the transition will happen automatically - without Obozo or another would-be Emperor forcing it down our throats.

Why do we need a "cure" for our use of fossil fuels? We still have plenty of the stuff in the ground. And it remains very affordable. We certainly aren't going to power our cars with renewables like wind solar or hydro any time in the near future.

Shoe leather express, I drive to an area, then hike to many different shops, stores, and the grocery while the vehicle sits on a grade in one lot to make starting off easy and more fuel efficient!

Everything should be gradual. The government is unrealistic and needs to let enterprise take it's course. It works - have you seen any large companies still making buggy whips? Right!

This may be so, but ONLY because of politics combined with a widespread resistance to change. We have the technology and the know-how TODAY to drastically cut our use of fossil fuels!

Last night I was reading about how the NASA Apollo program of the 1960s and early 1970s was a smash success, and was granted by Congress almost all the money it needed - because of a strong national desire to beat the Russians to the moon.

We could easily repeat something on that scale with a switch to renewable energy. We just lack the will to do so.
