Global sales of Toyota Prius push it into top three

GasBuddy Blog -- 15 years ago the Prius was an oddity, an ice-breaker at cocktail parties... and today it's the world's third best-selling car line, driven by U.S. demand and incentives in Japan, according to Bloomberg.

Prius sales have more than doubled and rebates and tax breaks are saving buyers in the ballpark of $2,500 or more. In the last quarter sales soared to more than 247,000 vehicles trailing only Toyota's Corolla (301,000) and Ford's Focus (277,000) sales. And the hybrid line also gives the Toyota brand three of the top 10 models in the U.S. so far this year.

Clearly, the hybrids are here to stay. "It proves Prius wasn't a fluke, there's a long-term market for hybrids," says Eric Noble, president of the Car Lab, an automotive...

Would not want a "Pry-Less". They have a terrible ride, are not very safe, and don not have either towing ability or much cargo capacity. I will stick with my Dodge truck and my Caddy! Oh and those govt rebates...they come from our taxes. If the product is so great why doe the govt need to bail it out with our tax dollars?

That's good for Toyota. I'm hopeful that the American companies can break into the hybrid market to win back some customers.

@w4kh:
"Global sales rank is quite different from sales in the US "
True, per capita, sales in the USA are well above worldwide sales. Over 1/3 of Prius sales have been in the USA.

I live in the south. A man needs a truck here. A Prius might be fine in a large city or when you don't have to haul fishing poles, tents, hunting gear, building material, topsoil, etc. in the back of your truck. Maybe as a second car it would be fine, but who has money nowadays for a second car, besides Mitt with his two Cadillacs?

@ModelWarships: re rebates:
Only the plug-in Prius is eligible for rebates ($2,500) in the USA. The article was not very clear. The subsidies for non plug-ins are in Japan.

Sales in the US & Canada are pretty good on Prius, they just need to make them a little more comfortable ergonomically.
If they made an SUV style or Venza type...........??

@malfrog1:
"Good news but haw many people have paid to have their batteries replaced and then also purchased another Prius? "

Zero because that is the number of batteries that have been replaced other than major collision damage.

A better question is: How many multi car families have more than one of a given model?
I know several that own 2 Prius, my own included. I don't know anyone who has two of the same 'other' car. I'm sure they exist, but common.

And even if I had to replace my battery TODAY after 124K miles, I would still buy another Prius in the future. I could buy FOUR new traction batteries with the amount of money I have saved in gasoline ALONE. Then add money in my pocket for all the maintenance I did NOT have to do (like brake replacements) that would have happened tens of thousands of miles ago but won't be needed in my Prius for tens of thousands more miles.

The Prius has no style. It reminds me of the cars that were built in Communist Russia.

why the hell are we still subsidizing this car? I have a hard enough time paying for my own car (made in the USA) without having to pay for you to import this one.

"Prius isn't likely to be matched any time soon by any other hybrid models. Why? Because Prius was the first hybrid on the block."

First - The original Honda Insight was sold in the USA (1999) before the Gen I (outside Japan) Prius (2000 - the 2001 model year)

Second - Prius sales won't be matched any time soon not because it was the first on the block but because it simply blows away all other hybrids, including the Hybrid Camry.
For reasons I do not know, the new Insight gets slightly worse MPG than the larger Civic Hybrid. Likewise, the smaller Prius C gets about the same MPG as a regular Prius. Other than the few thousand more purchase price, why NOT buy a larger regular Prius instead of the Prius C?

I have two of them. My 2005 is averaging 51.3 mpg and my 2012 is so far averaging just about 58 mpg.
