I agree with the trucker. I certainly do not have money to "burn" so price is important. However, quality just as important. I think your chances of getting better, more regulated gas is from a high-volume, recognized standard brand (not cut-rate). Cut rates buy whatever gas is available and cheap - it may not be the same brand today as tomorrow. And check out the way the station is maintained! A dirty station generally means dirty underground tanks where all the sediment collects. And those covers over the tanks can add to the dirt as well. You don't want it in YOUR tank. And if you see the fuel truck at the station, buy later that day, but not right now. A fill can stir the sediment that you don't want, but later on, once settled, a new fill will ensure that you are getting freshing gas, and not the bottom of the station's tank. Happy shopping - don't drive cross town for a deal.

This poll does not reflect the general public's opinion because this site attracts people that are focused on price.
I primarily focus on price; however, quality does factor in. I will not buy Maverik gas because every time I use it my check engine light goes on. I've had the car checked, but as soon as I fill my car with different branded gas the light goes back off. I don't trust mechanics, but they always site a bad oxygen sensor. I've been off Maverik gas for a couple of years, and the light has never gone back on.

I concur with other reports: Price is first consideration if the price is significantly lower than other available. Location and ability to get my rig in and out easy with/out the toyhauler is another. I prefer to buy fuel from a 'high volume' source as well...my perception is that the fuel will be 'fresh'. All the above are important to me and my 'wish list' is complete only if I can use my small business American Express.

I agree that the price of gas is the biggest factor, but I also factor the location and quality of gas because these factors are also important. For example, I would not drive across town just to save 2 cents on a gallon because I would waste that in gas getting there and back. The quality of the gas makes a difference as to how far you will get on that gas verses the competitors gas. For example, I do not like getting gas at MaxFuel in my town because the gas burns faster than other stations.

Price, And fuel perks, savings cards, etc. It has been a small, but helpful savings as long as the stations are in my path of travel.

Price and distance - it has to be close to where I'm going. I buy various 'brands' and haven't had any quality issues. The only quality issue was at a local station when they replaced premium with midgrade and didn't make the change obvious at the pump. Our car pinged with the midgrade so we stopped going there. The station later closed; I think this was just one of several times when customers had been treated poorly and it finally caught up with the owner.

for me price is the most important, I try to always get my fuel at costco if at all possible. they are usually a penny or so cheaper than any one else, and I get much of my food at costco anyways because they are much cheaper than most other places are. the high quality gas is usually 25 cents more a gallon so that can really add up real fast

357revo: Maybe you should look at what you can do to fix the problem, by looking at your habits before you start blaming others for the prices you yourself is just as at fault for the abuse of the same resources. What are you driving? Where is your thermostat set at (summer & winter)? How many lights are on in your house with no one in the room? My point is, you wanting to point fingers at the Greenies for all your problems; well, its about time you realize that 3 fingers are pointing back at you. Have a good evening!

Price - but that includes figuring how far out of my way I'd have to go and how low my tank is. Driving an extra 10 miles uses almost a whole gallon, as well as time, so unless there is a huge savings very close to a route I would usually take, it doesn't make much sense to go out of my way for a lower price. I will keep tabs on prices that are on my route, and choose from them, based on a combination of price and quality.

We as a nation can use our natural resources in environmentally responsible ways. That means drilling for oil, mining for coal, mining/drilling/recovering oil shale, REFINING OUR OWN CRUDE, building more hydropower plants, building nuclear facilities and reprocessing the fuel instead of entombing it in Yucca Mountain. But first...
We have to get rid of [vote out of office] the members of Congress who consider the environment their personal god, to whom all should kneel, and for whom no natural resource or industrial activity is clean enough to allow in this country.
So both Obama and McCain are in favor of doing "something" about climate change. If we vote out enough of the greenies, they still won't get a bill past Congress for their signature. That Climate bill that got proposed this past week would have killed our commerce and driven up the prices on ANY product that requires power to make, transportation to market, and electricity to run. That's everything, my friends.

The real reason is price, but I only use Shell because with their credit card I get 5 percent off. This means that at $4.40 a gallon I am really only paying $4.18. Other credit cards have similar advantages.

Stupid question! What else but price! The gas companies are all in bed with each other so product quality ain't the issue, the issue is they (in cahoots with the producers) are all out to screw the driving public.

If we all just thought about this for one minute. We brought this on ourselves. How you say? Lets thank about this.
We stopped all drilling in the US. Why? Because it would hurt the environment.
We stopped all exploration for new oil resources. Why. Because it would hurt the environment.
We stopped the building of new refiners in the US. Why? Because it would hurt the environment.
We stopped the building of Nuclear power plants. Why? Because it would hurt the environment.
We stopped any possible type of feasible mass transit. Why? Because it would hurt the environment. Yet we still drive our SUV’s & cars and yes trucks and NOW! we all question why is fuel costing us so much? I wonder....
We are going to have to learn that it is possible to work with industry and save the environment if we just STOP trying to prevent it from ever happening.
Lets all get off our higher than all mighty thinking and get with the program or we will all be paying more and more and more for what ever we buy..... Think about that for a min...

Depends on which vehicle I'm driving. If it is the car that takes prem. or my motorcycle, then it is the quality. If it is my pick-up, which uses reg. then I look for price (if I can, I'll get the reg. gas at a CostCo).

Price is important, but the quality is even more important. If you buy gas which contains few additives, you'll get worse mileage, refuel more often, and spend more money. Even more vital is the wear-and-tear on your car's engine from using cheap gas.
I limit my purchases to a handful of stations where I am confident in the quality of gas and have gotten 30+ miles per gallon in my 2001 5-speed manual Chevy Cavalier.

We are members of a cooperative and they give dividends. We did some calculations and we are farther ahead monetarily to get gas there at the going rate and receive dividends in return.

Where I live the cheapest gas is only a penny off. I also like to get gas that the pumps have separate hoses for each quality. If,(hardly never anymore) if I want to put premium in, I want that it to be all premium. Not reg. left in the hose.

I use 2 credit cards that rebate 5% of the cost of their fuels the following month. 1) is Shell and they are always higher than Hess which is the second card I use most of the time unless traveling. With gas at $4 gal that gives me back $.20 a gallon making my final cost $3.80 gal. Not much of a differnce, but every little bit helps I guess? When traveling, it is hard to find Hess in some areas, but Shell is usually always plentiful and more competitive than in my home area.

15-20 cents a gallon, maybe, just maybe I'll go out of my way for the savings, but if not any more than that, it would cost me more to drive there than I would save.

Price governs where I buy gasoline. However, I do try to buy brands that have 10% ethanol in them so as to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. I also use fuel system cleaner every 3000 miles when I change oil. This is a good idea because not all brands of gasoline have cleaner in them. By keeping the maintenance up on my car and hyper-miling, I am getting 4 mpg better fuel mileage.

I am sure we had this question before, and I think I may have answered it differently. Now it is strictly price. I buy the cheapest, and HOPE it is just as good as the major brands.
