NASA Satellite Spots Foul Pollution Trails Over Shipping Lanes

theatlanticcities.com -- Nitrogen dioxide is a nasty gas produced largely by internal-combustion engines. A small whiff of NO2 is enough to anesthetize the nose, and its chemical byproducts can harm the cardiovascular system and trash a good pair of lungs.

This pernicious pollutant is rampant throughout the planet, but nowhere moreso than above the heavily trafficked lanes of international shipping vessels. While we don't often see (or even think about) the smoke-belching monsters that bring us our Japanese tuna belly and cheap Indian shirts, NASA has found a nifty way to visualize the collective pollution that boats pump into the atmosphere.

.. The sickeningly dense clouds of nitrogen around the coasts of various countries arise from cities, obviously, with off-shore oil rigs producing intense concentration

Correct. Unfortunately, one day she might just decide to take care of us.

The shear number of cars certainly make more pollution then ships. But making ships less polluting will certainly help everyone (except those who like polluting to make a few bucks).

NASA Satellite Spots Foul Pollution Trails Over Shipping Lanes? Ships can transport huge amounts of cargo using a reasonable amount of fuel, with the resulting stack pollution produced. Just like trains can transport cargo and containers using a smaller amount of fuel than trucks would use over the roads and highways of the US, each carrying the same amount of cargo.
Maybe NASA Satellite can Spot the Foul Pollution Trails from the many different gases emitted by industrial and vehicle sources and the atmosphere content before industrialization and now. How has this pollution affected human life and the many different plants and other animal life on this planet since the start of industralization? Compare it to earth's natural gas releases from volcanos, marshes, bogs, deep organic deposits, oil and gas deposits, etc. or metor impacts from outside the earth.
Crude oil, natural gas and fuel price related?
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Whatever happened to the kite sails that ships were supposed to save fuel with?

Considering most shipping takes place in international waters there it little the EPA can do except bring it to people's attention. However I suspect all the semi-trucks on the roads produce a lot of the stuff too...

Scientific data being interpreted by an airhead journalist only interested in spewing alarmist BS.

The authors interchangeable use of "nitrogen" and "nitrogen dioxide", for example "The sickeningly dense clouds of nitrogen", is not just imprecise but for the person who does not realize that 79% of our atmosphere is composed of regular nitrogen (N2) is deceptive.

And ?"Foul Pollution"? as opposed to the regular pollution or the nice pollution that we all love.

Not surprised, but pollutants produced per ton of freight transported is probably the least for ships as compared to any other form of transport.

I guess what we need are electric powered boats dragging giant floating solar panels. Never mind having to pay the crews overtime on cloudy days, we can always just print more money. But wait, if it is also a windless day we won't have power to run the presses.

I thought the atmosphere was already 70% nitrogen, so dense clouds appear to be natural. This article is a waste of time to even read.
